INSPECTOR OF NUISANCES - A creative community response to attitudes to women’s health and working conditions in Newham over the last sixty years, inspired by Alice Billing.
Alice Billing House is an artist's studio in Stratford.
‘Inspector of Nuisances’ was the official job title for sanitation inspectors in the 19th century. Alice Billing was West Ham’s first female sanitation inspector, 1897-1930 and namesake of historic Alice Billing House. Alice provided a vehicle for working women to voice sensitive issues, in an environment of male officials.
Today, her legacy invites new conversations.
Are you passionate about local history, women’s rights, or social change?
Do you have experience working in public health or healthcare?
What do you consider to be today's nuisances’?
We would love to hear your stories and opinions.
Join artists Bo and Zoe from Frames of Mind at Alice Billing House for a series of three free, relaxed, creative workshops. Share your own stories and learn how to bring them to life using stop frame animation and recorded voice over.
Work produced will contribute to the Inspector of Nuisances exhibition for Newham Heritage Month 18th September 2025.
