BLACK HISTORY MONTH FABRICATION WORKSHOP

This Black History Month, we came together for a creative and inspiring fabrication workshop that celebrated storytelling, memory, and heritage through fashion. Using fabric as our medium, participants explored how textiles can hold and express personal stories of strength, identity, and pride.

Some used T-shirt material, while others chose from a beautiful, bold African print fabric. Guided step by step, everyone learned how to transform these materials into striking statement necklaces — wearable pieces that reflected their individuality.

Throughout the session, we explored various techniques, including creating knotted bead necklaces and textured strip scarves, as well as crafting flowing fringe designs from t-shirts. T

By the end of the workshop, each person had created something truly unique — not just a piece of jewellery, but a story made tangible through texture and colour.

The workshop was led by Joy Dean, founder of We Are Skater Booty and Hoop Hustle Flow. With her warmth and infectious energy, Joy brought everyone together in a vibrant atmosphere of creativity and self-expression. Her passion for community and body positivity shone through, making the experience not only about crafting but also about connection and celebration.

“Delivering the Black History Month workshop for Alice Billng House was a beautiful reminder of the power of creation and transformation. Through teaching jewellery fabrication — using store-bought materials or upcycled treasures from home — we explored how art can turn what’s broken into something bold, new, and meaningful. Watching the students SHINE with sheer Joy as they completed their pieces, realising they had gained a new skill and creative confidence, was immensely moving. It felt like a collective act of empowerment — rebuilding, reimagining, and reclaiming beauty from the everyday. I really hope they continue to grow!” - Joy Dean

Such a great workshop and a lovely, friendly teacher, Joy!”- Workshop participant, Newham
