LEARN TO BE A HERITAGE PRODUCER!
Apply to Become a Trainee Heritage Producer
Learn how to record local stories and create visual material for ‘Inspector of Nuisances’, a project developed for Newham Heritage Month 2025.
‘Inspector of Nuisances’ was the official job title for sanitation inspectors in the 19th century. This project is inspired by Alice Billing, Newham’s first female sanitation inspector (1897–1930), and namesake of the historic Alice Billing House.
The ‘Inspector of Nuisances’ played a vital role in public health—particularly for women, who often suffered in silence rather than raise sensitive issues with male officials.
“…Their work in the inspection of all public places where women work, including the homes of all women who take in outside work: tenement house visiting; and last, but no means least, investigating the causes of infectious disease…”
—Excerpt from Daily News, (London) 27/12/1902
Using Alice Billing’s legacy as a catalyst, the project invites local residents and health workers to explore the evolving role of women in health, and shifting attitudes toward public and working conditions in Newham over the last 60 years.
